Botox injection is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures against the signs of aging and those pesky wrinkles. Even though this procedure is relatively quick, painless and simple, there are still a few things that you cannot do and you need to avoid doing.
Touching your face after Botox injection
This is probably the No.1 thing you need to avoid. Botox injections will result in some redness and swelling on the injection site and that’s nothing to be concerned about. Some uncomfortable sensation is normal and you will definitely be tempted to touch your face, however, try and resist the urge. Cosmetic and plastic surgeons recommend that you don’t touch your face at least 24 hours after your Botox injection. Why is this important?
Well, first of all you need to know that Botox injections are supposed to be administered by a professional and knows exactly which muscle groups to target. The neurotoxin, which is injected needs some time to settle on your muscles. And when you touch it, you could move the Botox from the targeted area and that can result in an unwanted effect.
Refrain from strenuous activities
Aside from avoiding to touch your face, your plastic or cosmetic surgeon will advise you that you should refrain from any strenuous or physically intensive activities for at least a day or two after getting your Botox injection.
The logic is the same as behind the ‘don’t touch your face’ rule. Intensive physical activities could have the same effect as touching your face. For example, when you jog on a treadmill, the Botox in your face might get displaced. And if you get into an accident, for example slip and fall, not only will you displace the Botox but you can seriously injure yourself and your face.
So it’s best to stay at home, and avoid going to the gym or doing your regular yoga for eat least a day.
Taking pain medication after your Botox injection
We already mentioned that some pain, swelling and discomfort are to be expect, so don’t be alarmed. Some of you might even consider taking some pain medication after your Botox injection.
However, instead of taking medication, try putting some ice packs on the swollen area. This should help subside the swelling faster and relief the pain.
But if you really must take some medication for the pain, we STRONGLY urge you NOT to take Ibuprofen or any type of medication without first consulting your doctor. Many pain medications might have a bad reaction and could seriously hinder your healing process.
It’s also important to note that before your Botox injection, you will need to stop taking some medication which could cause complications with your treatment.
Consuming alcohol
Similarly to pain medication. Alcohol can also thin your blood which might hinder your recovery. Not only that, the swelling on your injection site could get bigger and you could develop serious bruising.
Yes, it appears that there are a lot of ‘DON’Ts’ when it comes to Botox injections. But remember, it’s for your most optimal outcome and best results. And you don’t have to refrain from all of them for a long time. You can also consult with your cosmetic surgeon on what is allowed and what isn’t and when can you return to your normal routine after your Botox injection.
