What is the ideal age for a facelift

Facelift, or medically known as rhytidectomy, is a type of cosmetic surgery that has to aim to provide a better, more youthful appearance to the patient. Plastic surgeons, through face lift usually work on:

  • Removing wrinkles and enhancing the fine lines of your face
  • Reduce the deep creases under your eyes (yes we all know how pesky these creases can be)
  • Redefining your jawline
  • Improving the contours of your cheeks
  • Improving facial volume due to hanging skin
  • Tightening the sagging skin on your face
  • Banishing facial folds and creases

Some cosmetic surgeons even recommend combining your facelift surgery with other procedures like eyelid lift, Botox (okay this one is a non-surgical procedure) or browlift surgery. All these, combined with a facelift should yield some pretty good and amazing results.

However, there is one burning question when it comes to facelift.

What is the ideal age for a facelift?

Well to put it plainly, there is no strict rule or guide which will tell you exactly what is the idea age for a facelift. It all comes down to the patient really, and what she (or even he) wants. Each and every patient is a unique case. Some might want to have a minor facelift at 35, other at 50 or later. Although we think that it’s entirely up to the patient, but we cannot disregard some of the factors which can ultimately determine whether someone is a good candidate for facelift or not.

When you stop by at Body by Kotoske and want to learn more about facelift, Dr. Kotoske will evaluate you based on the following factors:

  • Beauty – What beauty concerns do you might have that make you wish to do a facelift
  • Genetics – Not sure if you know this, but some ethnicities are not so prone to ageing and can stay youthful for a longer time. For example, Asian and Hispanic
  • Quality of your skin – Plastic surgeons evaluate the quality of your skin based on its condition, moisture, tightness or sagging
  • Lifestyle choices – Depending on your lifestyle, you might age faster or slower. So when consulting a plastic surgeon, he/she will ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle to determine at what pace will you be aging. Lifestyle choices that usually lead to faster ageing are smoking, working under high-stress, sleeping late at night etc.

The goal of every facelift surgery is to achieve maximum results and hide (remove) all those little signs of aging so you can preserve the youthful version of yourself. That’s why doing a facelift sooner is not such a bad option.

However, getting a facelift when you don’t have those tell-tale signs of ageing is pointless because you will have to do the procedure again, when those signs of aging finally come knocking.

With all this in mind, we recommend that you should postpone having facelift surgery in your 20s or early 30s. And yes, even though some wrinkles may be visible even at that age, but instead of doing facelift, we recommend trying other, non-surgical techniques as an alternative.

Now when you reach you reach the age of 35 to 40, this is considered to be the optimal age for facelift. The signs of ageing are noticeable, you can’t really tackle the with non-surgical methods BUT your skill is still elastic enough and it’s easy to achieve good natural results.

And if you’re in your 60s, you may have facelift surgery, but in order to be eligible, you need to be in good health. The plastic surgeon will discuss with you all the possible risks and complications with facelift surgery.

Non-surgical alternatives

We mentioned above, that having facelift surgery at a young age (in your 20s or early 30s) is not a wise decision and that you should explore other non-surgical alternatives. These alternatives are mostly injectable cosmetic treatments, which are minimally invasive and can provide the same results and appearance as fast lift but with much faster recovery time. These alternatives include:

  • Botox injections
  • Belkyra
  • Platelet rich plasma and
  • Juvederm
