If you’ve lost weight recently you probably have excess arm skin or saggy upper arms, you’re probably wondering if there’s anything you can do to get rid of it or reduce it. If you’re interested in Brachiplasty surgery but you have some questions, keep reading on.
Bachioplasty is an effective surgical method to reduce excess arm skin
As we get older, we could develop saggy or wobbly upper arm skin. There is more than one reason for this e.g., loss of elasticity in the skin, rapid weight loss etc. Some people aren’t bothered by this since the sagging isn’t that noticeable, but in extreme cases, the excess arm skin can limit your movement (when you’re exercising for example) and prevent you from wearing things you did before. This is where Brachioplasty or commonly known as arm lift comes in.
Arm lift, is a surgical procedure through which a cosmetic surgeon can contour your upper arm, giving it a more pleasant appearance. Not only does this improve the aesthetics, but it can also increase functionality of motion.
What’s involved in the procedure?
In a nutshell, the arm lift removes sections of the skin from the inner side of your upper arm, ranging from the armpit, all the way to the elbow. It’s a complex cosmetic procedure that sometimes (quite often actually) goes together with liposuction so that the contouring is more precise.
Once the excess arm skin is removed, the underlying muscles are tightened and the skin is stitched back together. Arm lift is done on both arms during the same procedure (Bilateral Brachioplasty) so the recovery time is shorter and less extensive.
Bilateral Brachioplasty involves two procedures, done on each arm and they are customized for each. Patients of course can choose to have one surgery done on one arm and then later on, to have the second surgery on the second arm. But in most cases, they have both arms done at the same time. During this procedure, in order to get good results, your surgeon will most likely utilize 2-4 advanced surgical techniques like skin reduction combined with liposuction.
What kind of results can you expect?
You might be wondering if your arms will look the same after excess arm skin surgery, given the fact that the two arms are not equal. Since the human body is naturally asymmetrical, each arm has a different girth and there are no two arms that are alike.
The main focus of Brachioplasty is to reduce the girth of the arms and to provide a firmer, smoother and younger-looking appearance of your upper arms. The asymmetry will be reduced, but some asymmetry will still be present but it won’t be so prominent.
The recovery and healing after Brachioplasty can take several months. Once you’re fully healed, there will be a long scar on the inner side of your arm, but it will fade over time and be visible only when your arms are in a certain position.
Is excess arm skin removal worth it and is it right for you?
Patients that struggle with excess arm skin, after they had the procedure, report that they feel much more confident in their appearance, have better mobility and are overall very satisfied with their choice.
However, we must note that not everyone with sagging arm skin is eligible for this procedure. To make sure that you’re a good candidate, we recommend that you contact a cosmetic surgeon and schedule a consultation.
