When it comes to breast lifts, recovery is as important as surgery, and breast massage plays a crucial part in it.

After a lift, breast massages can:

  • Help your incisions heal faster
  • Maintain the soft, supple, and natural feel of your breast tissue
  • Inhibit the development of scar tissue surrounding your implants
  • Boost the flow of blood to the treatment area
  • Assist with lymph fluid drainage

However, it is vital to know the right time to start massaging your breasts- starting too soon or too late can have negative effects on your recovery.

So, When Exactly Should You Start Massaging?

Dr. Kotoske will advise you on how frequently you should massage your breasts while our dedicated team develops a detailed plan and works with you to determine the best time to begin breast massaging. Follow the instructions strictly to achieve the best possible results.

We recommend waiting at least two weeks before beginning breast massage to allow the incisions to heal and the swelling to subside. If you massage your breasts too soon after your surgery, the incisions could reopen for an infection to develop.

Once you reach the two-week mark, you can begin massaging your breasts. The massage should be very gentle, causing no pain or discomfort. Avoid too aggressive or too frequent massages as they can lead to complications such as bleeding or infection. Steer clear of laceration by preventing direct massages of the wound region.

If you are at a stage where you are still deciding whether to opt for a breast lift/surgery or have any queries regarding the same, get in touch with us and clear all doubts with ease.

But, How Often Should You Massage Your Breasts?

Once you have clearance from your surgeon, massage your breasts two-three times a day for the first couple of months. Complete this practice for about five minutes each time. After the first two months, massage your breasts for five minutes a day or as often as recommended by Dr. Kotoske.

In the initial days, support the bottom of your breast with one hand while massaging with the other. Gradually with time, you can switch to more active techniques like pressing or stretching any tissue that feels hard.

Since implants are shaped and textured, they may not tolerate massage, resulting in changes to their ultimate look. So if you have implants, consult before starting massages.

What Massage Techniques Should You Use?

Incorporate massage into your daily routine by discussing it with Dr. Kotoske. Our team can demonstrate techniques for optimal outcomes. Several massage techniques can help after a breast lift, and here are a few suggestions from our team:

  1. Place your hands on the exterior of your breasts and press them towards your chest. Hold for a few moments before repeating.
  2. Gently press the tops of your breasts with your fingertips and push them downward. Release and repeat after some seconds.
  3. Place both your hands on the sides of a breast. Squeeze for a few seconds and then let go (the pressure should be firm but not painful). Repeat the same on the opposite breast.
  4. Grab your right shoulder with your left hand and squeeze your elbow towards your breast. Repeat and alternate the sides for some seconds.

Things To Know Before Massaging Scars

1. Should You Massage Scars?

Scars are known for being irritating. A massage can relieve its discomfort without inflaming the afflicted region. Also, massaging scar tissue removes built-up collagen from the spot, making the scar flatter on the skin’s surface. It is also an excellent way to help the scar remain moist, which aids the overall healing process. So yes, massage the scar area when needed.

2. When to Start Scar Massaging after a Breast Lift?

You must begin massaging your scar only after two weeks, once it has healed completely. Do not touch your scar if it has stitches or scabs on it.

3. How To Massage Scars?

With the tips of two or more fingers, gently apply pressure to the scar and its surrounding areas while moving your fingers in one of three directions:

  1. Back and forth along the length of the scar
  2. Side to side, moving along the length of the whole scar
  3. In small circles along the scar

4. Should You Use Cream or Lotion While Massaging Scars?

Ideally, you don’t have to use anything when massaging. However, lubrication moistens the scar and minimizes scabbing. So if you’re inclined to use a lubricant/product for massaging, kindly opt for the product your surgeon recommends.
