One of the most important feature of good looking breasts is perkiness. Most women are more focused on having and keeping perky breasts rather than what size they are.
Throughout their life, women go through several hormonal and physical changes e.g. breastfeeding, menopause, weight fluctuation, pregnancy etc. All these can have a huge impact on their once perky breasts and can make them look deflated and saggy.
Luckily, there are ways women can use to slow down the process and keep their perky breasts for a longer time.
Non-surgical methods for perky breasts include skincare products, exercise and lifestyle changes. These methods will slow down the sagging process but they cannot give you back your youthful breasts. The only way that can be achieved is through cosmetic surgeries such as breast implants, reduction, breast lift and fat transfer. These cosmetic procedures can provide younger-looking, perky, rounder and fuller breasts.
Why do breast sag over time?
Each set of breasts is made from glandular tissue, connective tissue and fat. When you’re young, you have well-rounded and perky breasts thanks to the connective tissue, which is also known as the “cooper’s ligament”.
The connective tissue looks like a web inside your breasts that holds the fat and glandular tissue together and lifts your breasts. When these ligaments become stretched, your breasts will lose perkiness.
In addition to this, once your skin becomes more stretched, breast become even more deflated and lose their fullness. This is why the most effective way to perky breasts is a combination of both breast lift and breast implants.
What is causing saggy breasts?
Your breasts can become less perky and start to sag thanks to several factors:
Aging process – As you age, your breast will continue to sag and drop and there’s nothing you can do about it. The ligaments inside your breast will be more and more stretched and gravity will do its thing.
Pregnancy – During pregnancy, your breast will become bigger. It’s your body’s natural process preparing you for the future of motherhood, nursing. Many women, once they are done with breastfeeding, are left with excess skin and deflated breasts.
Genetics – Every woman has a unique size and shape breasts. Some have smaller ones, while others have bigger. Those that have bigger boobs will display more deflation and more sagging.
Weight fluctuation – The well-known yo-yo effect of weight loss/gain can stretch the connective tissue and breasts can lose their perkiness.
Lifestyle choices – We all know that smoking is bad for your health. It can make your skin look older than it really is, but it can also significantly weaken the connective tissue in your breasts and make them “drop” faster.
How to keep perky breasts?
Most of the advertised methods for perky breasts are only exaggerations and can only help you prevent or delay the sagging process and skin wrinkling. The only proved and effective way to restore your perky breast is cosmetic surgery. You can have fuller and well-rounded boobs. But there are some ways you could help your breasts:
Perky breasts through good skin routine
Restoring the perkiness of your breasts and lifting them up isn’t possible through any type of skin cream or skin care product. However, if you have a good and healthy skin routine, especially on parts of your breasts that are exposed e.g. your cleavage, you can keep the skin tighter and reduce the wrinkles for a longer period of time.
Using sunscreen with good SPF and moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, especially if you life in a sunny and dry climate and you normally wear clothing that expose your cleavage.
Comfortable bras
There is some disagreement between doctors, where some argue that wearing a bra helps keeping perky breasts, while others believe that this actually accelerates the sagging process since it weakens the ligaments and supporting tissue. But there is no evidence to support either of these claims.
There are of course bras that can make your breasts look perkier and fuller, but that is just a physical representation. They don’t actually resolve any problems. Instead, we recommend that you wear a bra that is comfortable, fits your breast properly and allows you to have good posture, mobility and support while you exercise (if you exercise). This can significantly improve your breasts’ perkiness and health.
Regular exercise can help keep perky breasts
Through exercise, you can address several problems: bad posture, body weight, muscle mass etc. With regular exercise you can tackle all of these problems, strengthen the supporting ligaments inside your breasts and improve your overall health.
Smoking
We’ve all heard that smoking is bad for your overall health. And that’s true. The most visible and harmful effects of smoking can be seen on your skin. Smoking accelerates the skin’s natural ageing process, causes your skin to lose elasticity and weakens the supporting ligaments in your breast.
Hydration
Keeping your body well hydrated is very important. A normal water balance can ensure that your body stays healthy and you can even prevent early signs of skin ageing. So make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Hopefully these tips will help you slow down and delay breast sagging. You won’t be able to have perky breast forever, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t delay the process. And if these non-surgical methods don’t provide the results you’re hoping for, you can contact Dr. Kotoske and discuss what are your breast surgery options.
