Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. It can yield quite beautiful results. But sometimes, breast implants aren’t the ideal option to get the results you want. But thanks to fat transfer (aka fat grafting) cosmetic surgeons around the world have been able to push boob job techniques even further.
The combination of both breast implants and fat transfer in the area of breast augmentation has been a big step in getting the desired aesthetic results. After all, boob jobs are not a “one size fits all” kinda thing.
With this approach, we use liposuction to remove excess fat from a specific area (let’s say your stomach or hips) and then we re-insert it into your breasts. You basically tackle two problems at the same time.
How does this work?
The idea behind this innovative approach is quite simple. Fat tissue that used to bother the patient is sucked out from one part of the body and later we do a fat graft of that same tissue to another part of your body e.g., your breasts. We achieve two goals with this. Firstly, we help thicken the tissue surrounding the breast implant, providing more volume to your breasts. Secondly, we can also address some issues with the shape of your breasts.
When can you combine fat transfer and breast augmentation?
Even though combining fat grafting and breast augmentation is trendy, that combo cannot be utilized with every patient or every type of breast augmentation surgery. Fat transfer can be utilized with a boob job:
- With the primary augmentation with both implants and fat transfer
- Primary augmentation with fat transfer
- Revision augmentation
- Implant removal and fat transfer
Furthermore, fat grafting can also be used to re-shape and fine tune the contours of your breasts to provide better cleavage.
Fat transfer can be tailored to meet your personal needs. So if you’re looking for a boost or improvement in your cleavage, in addition to getting breast implants, you can also have fat transfer for better results. And if you still want slightly bigger breasts, but don’t want to go for implants, you can achieve the desired increase just through fat transfer.
Is everyone a good candidate for this?
No, not everyone is suitable for this kind of procedure. For example, if you don’t have enough fat on your body, there’s nothing for the cosmetic surgeon to extract. But don’t be fooled into thinking that just because you’re fit and thin, you don’t have fat in your body. To be absolutely sure if you can have fat transfer with breast augmentation, we recommend that you consult a cosmetic surgeon so they can assess you.
Important questions before the procedure
Before you commit to any kind of cosmetic surgery, you need to ask your surgeon everything there is to know about the procedure. Furthermore, you should also consult with him/her on how to prepare yourself for the surgery. This is vital to ensure that you have realistic expectations about the outcome.
And since these surgeries utilize fat transfer, you should also ask your surgeon about the fat transfer techniques he/she uses and about the fat purification process.
What can you expect from this procedure?
Just like each patient is different and there are no two exactly the same procedures, you can expect different results. During your consultation, we will guide you through the goals based on your body shape and see if a breast implant alone will be able to ensure the desired results, or if we should also utilize fat transfer.
With fat transfer alone, you can expect subtle changes, something like half a cup size. But if you’re wanting more dramatic change in shape and size, then breast implants are necessary.
Is the recovery different?
Since this type of breast augmentation is a bit different (we don’t use just implants) the surgery can take a bit longer but you will be able to return home the same day.
You can expect a bit more swelling than with traditional augmentation so your breasts might look bigger at first, but that will subside in time. Once the swelling subsides and goes down, your breast will feel and look smaller and this is normal. There’s no reason to panic and think that the fat transfer is gone. The only thing that will be gone is the swelling. For more details about the recovery and what can you do to make it go smoother and better, contact us.
