Eyelid Surgery – Things to know

Before any surgery, you need to know if you’re a good candidate and whether or not you have the right tools to achieve success. So it’s natural that you’ll have a few questions. In case you’re considering having eyelid surgery, you need to be prepared. Hopefully this post will help you.

For eyelid surgery, the experience of your surgeon matters

Just like with every other surgery, choosing the right surgeon is the first key step you have to take.  Choosing a surgeon should not be taken lightly and you should definitely NOT rush this process. Instead, make sure you do your homework, research and narrow it down to two or three. Then schedule a consultation with them.

During your consultation with the surgeons, ask them how many eyelid surgeries have they performed, what are their credentials and certifications with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and American Board of Surgery.

It’s okay to feel nervous

During your consultation with the surgeon you will cover all the basics about eyelid surgery and some of them might make you nervous (recovery time, possible complications etc.) which is totally normal. You might even be a bit anxious and excited to see your new results after eyelid surgery recovery.

However, having a skilled and experienced cosmetic surgeon to perform the procedure and to be clear on the expectations should calm your jitters.

Eyelid surgery will require that you take time away from work

Even though eyelid surgery is considered to be a cosmetic procedure, no matter if you’re doing it for medical or cosmetic reasons. You shouldn’t be surprised when your surgeon recommends that you take time off from work and other activities to rest and recover.

Most patients that undergo eyelid surgery are able to return to work after 10 or 14 days but some activities (like reading) you’ll be able to resume in just a few days.

After eyelid surgery refrain from makeup and contact lenses

In order to ensure the best and fastest recovery after your procedure and reduce the swelling, you need to make sure that you don’t scratch or rub your eyes. So wearing makeup or contact lenses should wait, because in both situations, you’re touching your eyes.

In addition to NOT rubbing/scratching your eyes, you can also apply cold compresses, wear sunglasses and even use eye drops to be more comfortable.

Your look won’t change

People that are considering eyelid surgeries are sometimes worried that after the procedure, their physical appearance will change so drastically that your friends or loved ones won’t be able to recognize you. This is of course not true.

Eyelid surgery doesn’t alter your physical appearance. You will still look the same, but younger and more energized. You’ll have a new, fresh and recharged look.

Good results take time

Getting back to your normal life after surgery should be pretty easy and fast. After approximately two weeks, you will be able to resume your daily routine without many problems. But the final results of the procedure will need some time. Swelling could take a few months to subside so the final results of your eyelid surgery should start to show between six months and a year.

Hopefully this information will be useful if you’re considering eyelid surgery. And if you made up your mind and want to see if you’re a good candidate, make sure to contact Dr. Kotoske and schedule an appointment.
