Should you exercise right after boob job?
Have you ever wondered whether you can exercise right after a boob job? Many people live a very active and dynamic lifestyle and fitness is a big part of their daily routine. Now despite their continuous efforts in working out and trying to stay fit and healthy, they aren’t able to “shake off” some of the stubborn fats or restore a thinner, more youthful look of their body. This is where cosmetic and plastic surgery comes into play.
If you’re struggling with getting rid of stubborn fat deposits, a good alternative treatment will be to have a liposuction. And if you have gone under a significant (and rapid) weight loss and you have sagging skin, there are procedures that can help you tighten it. And finally, if you don’t fall into any of these two categories, but still want to have perky and well-rounded breasts, you might consider having breast augmentation or a boob job. Patients that have an active lifestyle, often wonder if exercise right after a boob job is possible and allowed.
The short answer to this question is – No. You should not exercise after a boob job, until you have reached the end of your recovery process or at least your cosmetic surgeon says that you can.
But let’s explain this a bit further.
Recovery time after a boob job
The duration of the recovery time after each individual boob job is determined by a number of factors, and you won’t find two identical cases. The recovery varies from one patient to the other depending on:
- The type of incision the plastic surgeon used
- The size and shape of the implants
- How were the implants placed
- Were there any additional procedures with the boob job and
- How diligent you are when it comes to following your post-op instructions
During the first few weeks after the procedure, you should expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising so exercise after a boob job would not be possible. All that discomfort, swelling and bruising is completely normal and nothing to be alarmed. Your body is going through its natural healing process and you will need to allow some time for it to pass.
Furthermore, during the first few weeks, you might notice that the implants are a bit firm and that they are sitting a bit higher on the chest. This is also normal and as the swelling subsides, the implants will fall into place and everything will look the way it should.
During that first couple of weeks, exercise right after a boob job is high discouraged. You can not only undo the results of the surgery, but also create additional problems. Remember, it takes about 4-6 weeks for the swelling to subside and additional 6-12 months for the final results to become visible.
After the first week or two, you will be able to return to your light desk work but you should keep avoiding any strenuous activity, this include exercising and/or lifting heavy things.
How painful is the recovery from a boob job?
If you follow all the recommendations and guidelines that you get from you surgeon, you should be able to manage the recovery after a boob job pretty well. We’ve mentioned before, some level of discomfort is normal and to be expected. You can relieve these symptoms with medication or other alternative techniques. To make your post boob job recovery and smooth as possible, make sure that you:
- Get plenty of rest,
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Don’t spend all day in bed or sitting. Take a walk around the house or your block – this will promote better blood circulation
- Eat healthy and light
- Refrain from smoking
- Make sure that you attend your follow-up appointments
- Wear compression garments or supportive bra
- Avoid exercise right after boob job
How soon can you start exercising?
This is probably one of the most important question that active women have once they have their breast augmentation. Heavy lifting or strenuous activities should be avoided for the first 4-6 weeks post-op. In addition to this rule, you should also seek clearance from your surgeon.
Exercising your upper body might be off-limits for a longer period of time but you should be able to resume with your lower body workout and go do some mild walking. Whichever the case, it’s important that you first speak to your surgeon and get his clearance.
Exercise right after a boob job – What can happen?
If you ignore your plastic surgeon’s guidelines and start exercising right after a boob job, you could deal devastating damage both to your recovery process and also to the end result of the surgical procedure. There are number of complications that can arise, including (but not limited to):
- Delayed healing
- Severe pain
- Pulling out sutures
- Implant displacement, rotation or shifting which we discussed in detail here.
- Implant rupture
- Possible need for a second, revision procedure
We understand that some of you might be too eager to get out there and resume your daily workout routine. But it’s important that you pace yourself during the first couple of weeks of your recovery so you could get the desired results and avoid potential complications. Once your surgeon clears you for exercising, you can gradually start working out and enjoy the results you’ve achieved for many months.
