In one of our previous posts we define what is Brachioplasty (or Arm Lift), what are the treatment options and risks are most associated with this procedure.

Today, we will be talking about arm lift recovery and the basic things you need to know. So let’s dive in.

What to Expect After Arm Lift Surgery?

Since Brachioplasty may result in some minor swelling of your arms, aside from bandages, your surgeon might fit you with a compression garment to keep the swelling down.

Arm lift surgery is done under anesthesia, so you might feel a bit groggy. Right after surgery, you will receive post-operative pain medication and it’s highly important that you have someone to take you home.

During the first few days after surgery, you should keep physical activity to a minimum. You should let someone else do your grocery shopping, meal prepping and general household chores.

Make sure that you drink plenty of water and fluids because being well-hydrated speeds up the healing process. It’s also important to eat a well-balanced diet.

And in case your surgeon sets up a drain for you, you should check it regularly, following your surgeon’s tips and guidelines.

Is Arm Lift Recovery Painful?

While you recover from your arm lift surgery, it’s pretty normal that you’ll feel some discomfort. Most patients experience some soreness, minor swelling, and bruising that passes after a few days.

Usually, it’s recommended to plan 1-2 weeks for recovery. However, some patients might need a few weeks more for the tissue in their arms to heal. Patience is key!

In order to speed up the recovery, improve blood circulation and reduce swelling, your surgeon will most likely recommend using pillows to keep your arms elevated. You can take pain medication if needed.

Comfort is very important in the first few weeks after arm lift surgery. That’s why we strongly recommend that you wear comfy loose clothing which you can easily take on and off. So wear something with a zipper or buttons, instead of a pullover.

Monitor your surgical site regularly. If you notice any unusual changes like increased redness, drainage or more than usual swelling, contact your surgeon as soon as possible.

Will I Have a Scar After Arm Lift Surgery?

Just like most surgical procedures, an arm lift surgery involves making incisions to remove the excess skin, so it’s normal to have a scar post-surgery. However, the incision line will gradually heal and will become more refined.

It’s imperative that you don’t expose the scar to direct sunlight in the first 12 months after your arm lift surgery.  This will help avoid discoloration of the scar. In the beginning, the scar will be light pink which will fade over time to your normal skin color.

When Can I Get Back To Work After Arm Lift Surgery?

The standard recovery time from arm lift surgery is 1-2 weeks. For a faster and better recovery, follow your surgeon’s instructions. Make sure that you’re well-rested and that you avoid any strenuous physical activity such as carrying heavy things (yes, even shopping bags count) or lifting things over your head.

Weakness in your arms and hands is totally normal during the early stages of your recovery. They will feel stronger over time while you heal.

If you’re the kind of person that likes to exercise, you will need to pause your routine while your arms heal. Your surgeon will recommend when to start exercising after your arm lift surgery, although most patients, can resume their exercise routine after a month or two. Just make sure that you keep things slow and increase the load gradually. Once the doctor gives you the go-ahead, you can even start strength training. This will significantly improve muscle growth and help to tone your arms.

Can I Combine Arm Lift Surgery with Other Procedures?

In order to avoid going under anesthesia twice and doing two post-recovery periods, many patients choose to combine their arm lift surgery with another cosmetic procedure.

The most common combination includes upper body lift, which involves contouring your breast, abdomen, and arms all during the same procedure. Breast surgery is often recommended with a tummy tuck and liposuction.

When you combine procedures, you go under anesthesia once. However, depending on how many procedures you have done, the recovery time could be longer.

For additional information on what other cosmetic procedures can you combine with arm lift surgery and what is their recovery time, consult with your doctor.

In the end, the most vital part of your post-recovery is the surgeon. The right cosmetic surgeon should have extensive experience and to be a specialist in arm lifts. Properly done, an arm lift surgery combines with a good recovery, will result in shapely arms and a better self-image.
